Several things are “must haves” when it comes to setting up
the perfect atmosphere for football tailgating. It doesn’t matter if you’re
watching with the family or setting up a party for football enthusiasts, this
suggested list will mean the difference between making a touchdown and
incurring a penalty.
- If you don’t already have one, consider purchasing an awning. This simple feature provides protection from the elements. If an awning isn’t possible, use a couple of large collapsible umbrellas or an outdoor tent/canopy.
- Provide plenty of seating for guests. Folding lounge chairs allow folks to stretch out and get comfortable.
- Games in the fall and winter seasons mean cool to cold temperatures. If watching the game outdoors, supply plenty of cozy throws and a portable heater or two for guests gathered around the TV. For spring and summer, change out the heaters for powerful portable fans and include sunscreen and bug repellent.
- You’ll definitely want to have a TV set up outside so folks won’t miss a single pass.
- If the weather is friendly and you have extra room to play, have some outdoor activities like horseshoes, darts (made with foam), and a separate TV with video games to play during halftime or to keep kids entertained.
- Plan a menu to include snacks, appetizers, finger food, selections for vegetarian friends, plenty of beverages, and the main course.
- Do as much prep work as possible prior to the game so all you’ll have to do is lay out a buffet of goodies and fire up the grill. Use paper plates, plastic utensils, and paper towels to keep clean up quick and easy.
- If you don’t want to worry about too many leftover burgers, wings, ribs, salads, or desserts, provide styrofoam containers for guests to take home a doggie bag.
